Our first activity in 2011 was on February 5th: a visit to Lier.
Lier is a suburb of the city of Antwerp, a city with a lot of history. There used to be a famous public Teachers' Training school, a Royal Cadet Corps and the headquarters of 2nd Artillery Battalion. Birthplace of Felix Timmermans, Flemish writer and painter. Moreover it boasts a lovely "beguinage" and a famous clocktower, called "Zimmertoren". We ended this lovely day with a nice meal in the historic centre of the town.

World friendship Day - April 2nd, 2011 - a guided walk in Voeren.
Voeren is a Flemish municipality located in the Belgian province of Limburg. Bordering the Netherlands to the north and the Walloon province of Liège to the south. Voeren's name is derived from that of a small right-bank tributary of the Meuse, the Voer, which flows through the municipality. It's a real paradise for walkers. "Seniora Primavera" joined us the whole day. We enjoyed the famous local gin "Voerens Drupke" and ate exquisite "boudins" (black pudding). As usually we ended the day with a nice meal in the restaurant “Afspanning De Swaen”.

Happy 25th anniversary Friendship Force of Limburg!

From August 9th till August 15th we celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Friendship Force of Limburg. On this occasion we had a real multi-cultural exchange with 26 ambassadors from the F.F. of Chicago, U.S.A. ,as well as 5 ambassadors from Moscou, 1 from Japan, 1 from Romania and 1 from Canada.
On the programme: a visit to a brewery, an official welcome in the beautiful town hall of the city of Bree (in the north of our province) A real discovery of the rich agrarian area of the province of Limburg, called Hesbaye, with the visit of a fruit farm in the morning and the city of Borgloon with a visit to a winery in the afternoon. A visit to Bruges.
The highlight of the week was certainly the " Friendship Force of Limburg 25th anniversary" - party. A very stylish official part with speeches of Arthur Smeers, our club-president, of the Mayor and an alderman of the city of Diepenbeek, of Cécile Bouchet, member of the F.F.I. board and of the E.D.'s of the different international clubs. The choir "Het Volgende Punt" and the Russian flute player, Maria Filipyeva, added a lovely musical note to this happy event.
The end of the programme was a railbike activity. On Tuesday the ambassadors left and enjoyed a 5-day trip to Brussels, Normandy and Paris.

Van 29 oktober tot 9 november: bezoek aan de F.F. of Azrou, Morocco.
Op 29 oktober 2011 vertrokken zeven leden van onze club en twee leden van de club van Leuven op reis naar Marokko.
In Casablanca werden wij opgewacht door Lotfi Lamrani (voorzitter van de club van Friendship Force van Azrou). Hij heeft ons gedurende de ganse reis begeleid. Deze reis was een echte inleefreis waar wij ook door het logeren bij een drietal gastgezinnen konden kennis maken met de echte Marokkaan, zijn cultuur en zijn levenswijze.Het land is adembenemend mooi met heel veel contrasten. Soms verbleven wij in de woestijn met vrij hoge temperaturen en een dag later moest ons busje zich een weg banen door de sneeuw in de Midden-Atlas . Wij maakten ook kennis met enkele toeristische troeven van het land zoals de keizerlijke steden, souks, markten, de Hassanmoskee van Casablanca enz....
Deze Friendship Forcereis was een succes. Wij zijn allen verrijkt en met een frisse kijk op de Marokkaanse samenleving teruggekomen.

Algemene ledenvergadering op zondag 20 november in de zaal "De Kei" te Diepenbeek.
Onze jaarvergadering werd een fijne bijeenkomst, bijgewoond door een 40-tal leden. Gezellig babbelen en nakaarten over het voorbije jaar. Nieuwe plannen werden gesmeed voor 2012. Wij mochten ook weer enkele nieuwe mensen begroeten, zodat de toekomst van de F.F. of Limburg verzekerd blijft.
